PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission; Construction and Renewable Energy Sectors.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Identify, inspect, use, maintain and care for engineering hand tools.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

  • Hand tools include, but are not limited to: hand saws, hammers, screw drivers, sockets, spanners, chassis punches, side cutters, pliers, wire strippers, drill bits, measuring tools, torque wrench, etc.
  • Application include but is not limited to dismantling (loosening, tightening of bolts) cutting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Unsafe and faulty tools are identified and marked for repair/ maintenance or replacement according to set procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Chisel/punch type tool heads are inspected for "mushroom" effect and with drawn from use until maintained or replaced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Cutter type tool cutting edges / griping edge are inspected for chips; ridges, sharpness and hand grip to ensure that it is serviceable.

    4. Screw diver type tools are inspected for damage to tips or hand grip to ensure that they are serviceable.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Chisel/ punch type tool heads with "mushroom effect" are grinded down to remove sharp edges to ensure that they can be used safely; then tips with burs or chips are grinded to make sharp, for effective use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Flat Screw driver tips with burs or chips are filed and prepared to a manufacturers specification ensuring that they are serviceable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Adjustable spanners / tools adjusting/ moving mechanisms are lubricated to ensure free movement and serviceability.

    4. Engineering files cutting edge are cleaned using wire brush to ensure serviceability.
