PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard provides a broad introduction to the correct use of basic equipment used in the insurance industry. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner's own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Following instructions to operate office equipment.
  • Maintain equipment in a clean and working condition.
  • Monitor and request equipment consumables.
  • Recognise and take steps to minimise risks to safety when operating equipment in an office environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should
  • Hold a GETC or equivalent qualification; or
  • Be competent in communication and mathematical literacy NQF level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard includes, but is not limited to, equipment such as photocopier, facsimile machine, telephone, printer, calculator, franking machine, adding machine multifunction machines and kitchen appliances used in an office environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment used in own area of responsibility is identified in terms of function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instructions for operating equipment are understood and followed responsibly with due regard for safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common problems or faults that occur on a routine basis are identified and solved following the manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Persistent and non-routine problems/faults that require specialist technical skills are recognised and reported to the relevant authority. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Maintain equipment in a clean and working condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is cleaned and kept in good repair in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consumable items are replaced according to the procedures for the particular machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dangers of working with electricity are known and understood and safety precautions are applied when cleaning equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The risks or hazards associated with the use of equipment and the dispose of waste from the machines are known and discarded items are disposed of safely and appropriately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The relevant legal requirements that apply to Regulations and Warranties are known for selected equipment.

    Monitor and request equipment consumables.

    The area around the equipment is organised to minimise risk to self and others and existing or potential safety risks involving equipment are corrected within own work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety risks involving equipment outside own work area are identified and are reported to the appropriate authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Actions to be taken to deal with emergencies involving equipment are identified for a specific organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Emergencies involving equipment are reported and in an agreed format and according to an organisation's procedures.
