PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are affected by change in a work environment. It would be useful for line managers and persons responsible for implementing policies determined by senior management. It will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage change in the workplace.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Investigating different types of change that can occur in an organisation and the implications of each for the employee.
  • Researching employment trends in a specific sector or industry.
  • Identifying potential risks to the individual as a result of changes in the workplace.
  • Investigating techniques for dealing with change in the workplace. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is change relating to the individual in the workplace including both upside and downside risk.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Investigate types of change that can occur in an organisation and the implications of each for the employee. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Change that can occur in a workplace as a result of Employment Equity (EE) issues is identified and an indication is given of the resultant pressures on both employers and employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Change that can occur in a workplace as a result of issues associated with globalisation is identified and an indication is given of the resultant pressures on both employers and employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Changes that can occur in a workplace as a result of natural attrition are identified in terms of both opportunities and threats to individual employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Changes that can occur in a workplace as a result of downsizing, retrenchment and redeployment are identified in terms of both opportunities and threats to individual employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Changes that can occur as a result of innovations in technology are identified for a specific industry or workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Changes resulting from the relocation of a business are discussed with reference to opportunities and threats to individual employees.

    Possibilities for employment in the sector in a selected area are identified from the media.

    Skills required in a specific sector or industry are identified from the media and an indication is given of skills that could be required due to changes in technology.

    The importance of multiskilling in the 21st Century is explained with reference to an individual's attitudes and values in the workplace.

    Identify potential risks to the individual as a result of change in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Emotional reactions to change are identified and an indication is given of how typical reactions to change can be managed proactively. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Opportunities and threats in situations of change in the workplace are examined for individual employees in three different situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal issues arising from retrenchment, redeployment, retirement and accepting a voluntary package are discussed from the point of view of employees who leave and those who remain behind.

    Investigate techniques for dealing with change in the workplace.

    The power of knowing oneself in coping with change is explained and an indication is given of how self knowledge affects personal decisions.

    Attitudes and values that assist in dealing with change are identified and an indication is given of how an individual can facilitate own responses to change in the workplace.
