PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who operate a self-propelled knuckle boom loader in a non-production situation.

People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the self-propelled knuckle boom loader.
  • Prepare and start-up a self-propelled knuckle boom loader.
  • Operate a self-propelled knuckle boom loader.
  • Park, shut-down and maintain a self-propelled knuckle boom loader after use. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
    Demonstrate knowledge of mechanical timber handling equipment. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence can be demonstrated on any self-propelled knuckle boom loader, which is mounted on its own under carriage. Truck and trailer mounted knuckle boom loaders are excluded from this unit.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the self-propelled knuckle boom loader.

    Safety features on the machine are identified and their purpose explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of operating the machine outside its operating, reach and lifting capabilities are explained in terms of the effect on safety and damage to the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maximum weight and diameters of logs able to be loaded are identified according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Slope, terrain and ground clearance limitations are explained according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Service intervals of the machine are stated according to manufacturer's specifications.

    Hazards specific to operating self-propelled knuckle boom loaders and ways to minimize these are explained.
