PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who fell trees with a chainsaw using specialised techniques. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Fell trees using specialised techniques if wedges are not required.
  • Fell trees using specialised techniques if wedges are required. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
  • Maintain a chainsaw and cut felled timber using a chainsaw.
  • Fell trees with a chainsaw using the standard technique and felling levers.

    Fell trees using specialised techniques if wedges are not required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Situations requiring specialised techniques without using wedges are described in terms of section 10.11.2 of the Handbook. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tree diameter is more than the guide bar length, tree diameter is double or more the guide bar length, trees that lean at a sharp angle with the felling direction, trees that lean away from the felling direction, technique to reduce butt wastage, trees that split.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Trees are felled with the tree diameter more than the guide bar length complying with section 10.11.2.1 regarding technique, section 10.5 regarding safety and section 10.8 regarding quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Trees are felled with the tree diameter double or more the guide bar length complying with section 10.11.2.2 regarding technique, section 10.5 regarding safety and section 10.8 regarding quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Trees are felled that lean at a sharp angle with the felling direction complying with section 10.11.2.4 regarding technique, section 10.5 regarding safety and section 10.8 regarding quality.

    Trees are felled that lean away from the felling direction complying with section 10.11.2.5 regarding technique, section 10.5 regarding safety and section 10.8 regarding quality.

    Large trees with no or slight lean, trees in variation of natural lean, trees that lean back.

    Large trees are felled with no or slight lean complying with section 10.11.3.1 regarding technique, section 10.5 regarding safety and section 10.8 regarding quality.
