PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can receive, offload, store and prepare for infeed of timber into the fibreboard and chipboard plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Receive and inspect incoming timber.
  • Offload and store timber for production.
  • Prepare timber for infeed into plant. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at ABET 3.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the fibreboard and chipboard industry process and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to ABET level 3 requirements.
  • Telelogger's, front-end loader and weighbridge license and relevant plant machinery experience. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment, which can be described as a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing plant with all its equipment and the correct sequence of the production phases.
  • The spread of raw material processed and products produced by the operation.
  • The people involved in the various workplaces.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a fibreboard and chipboard manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive and inspect incoming timber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The area is kept clean, neat and safe as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is utilised as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The incoming timber is weighed and checked against requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The timber is inspected to ensure that it meets the specified quality requirements as per the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    If a variance is identified the relevant person is notified as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Offload and store timber for production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Timber that meets the specified quality requirements is offloaded into the relevant area in the plant as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Timber is stacked so as to facilitate stock control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of stock rotation are carried out as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare timber for infeed into plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The knives of the chipper have been changed strictly according to the procedure and the securing bolts are torqued correctly in accordance to the manufacturers specified settings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The chipper and the auxiliary machinery (if applicable) are started up in the correct sequence as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The infeed of the chipper and the auxiliary machinery (if applicable) is filled with the correct materials as per the production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The control panel is operated to ensure that the operation runs according to work instructions and produces product according to specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The different categories of timber are separated (where applicable) and stored for further processing requirements as per production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    All the infeed devices are loaded with the correct requirements as per the production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The levels in the plant infeed remain constant and in according to the required timber mix (where required) to achieve production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    If any problems are detected, the relevant contact person is notified in order to correct the fault. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    A record of the malfunction is kept as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    The area is kept clean and safe at all times as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
