PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can apply the acquired knowledge to achieve the prescribed standards in managing the debarking of poles and logs in a wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Supervise the preparation for the bark removal process.
  • Manage the debarking process.
  • Inspect debarked poles and logs.
  • Check that the debarking area is kept clean and safe.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Note:
  • The debarking process involves the removal of bark and cambium from the surface of poles and logs and logs to allow for proper drying out of the wood and a subsequent treatment with preservative.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The pole and log debarking area in the wood preservation plant, with all the equipment, tools and instruments used there.
  • The personnel responsible for managing and performing the activity of debarking in this work area.
  • The raw materials handled in this specific work area.
  • The relevant product specifications.
  • The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.
  • The work procedures relevant to this work area.
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this work area.
  • The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this work area.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Supervise the preparation for the bark removal process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The preparation of equipment and labour for the debarking process is supervised to ensure that these will be in the prescribed condition for operation as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Checks are carried out to ensure that the preparation process is performed at the prescribed work rate while achieving the required standards of preparedness as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Manage the debarking process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The debarking process is managed using the specified company procedures to facilitate that the debarking process is carried out as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The debarking production process is overseen to facilitate that the debarked poles and logs meet the quality standard as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the prescribed standards of operation as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect debarked poles and logs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prescribed procedures are adhered to by the supervisor/manager to facilitate that the product meets the required quality standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The products are inspected to facilitate that they meet the prescribed quality standards and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are carried out to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the required quality of poles and logs as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Check that the debarking area is kept clean and safe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Management procedures are in place to facilitate that the cleanliness and safety conditions of the debarking area comply with the OSH Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The debarking area is kept clean and safe in order to meet the requirements of the OSH Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are carried out to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate while achieving the set company standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

  • Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.
