PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can demonstrate an understanding of specific details of process in his/her workplace in wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Supervise the identification of the loads of materials coming into the wood preservation plant.
  • Monitor the recording of the relevant details of each incoming load of wood.
  • Check the accuracy of the estimation or calculation of the volume of each load of incoming material.
  • Supervise the unloading of each incoming consignment of material. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The incoming material receiving area in the wood preservation plant with all the equipment, tools and instruments used there
  • The personnel responsible for managing and performing the task of receipt, marking, recording and unloading in this work area.
  • The raw materials handled in this specific work area
  • The record documentation methods and materials used in this work area
  • The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of material and handling aids.
  • The work procedures relevant to this work area
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this work area
  • The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this work area.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Supervise the identification of the loads of materials coming into the wood preservation plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are carried out to ensure that the load of incoming material is appropriately marked with the correct mark/"tag", is visible to and readable by the relevant persons involved in the further processing as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The marking process is supervised to ensure that it is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the required standards of marking. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor the recording of the relevant details of each incoming load of wood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are carried out to facilitate that the recording documents are filled in correctly and accurately reflect the particulars of the relevant load of incoming material as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The recording process is supervised to facilitate that it is carried out at the prescribed work rate achieving the prescribed standard of recording as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Check the accuracy of the estimation or calculation of the volume of each load of incoming material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are carried out to facilitate that the estimates and calculations of volumes are within the required limits of accuracy as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process is supervised to facilitate that it is performed at the prescribed work rate and achieving results which comply with the required standards as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Supervise the unloading of each incoming consignment of material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are carried out to facilitate that the incoming loads of material are correctly unloaded on the prescribed supports and correctly positioned for further handling as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process is supervised to facilitate that it is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the set standards as detailed in the work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.
  • Competency in controlling the receiving, recording, estimating and/or calculating the volumes of loads of material to be treated, and unloading these, equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.
  • Workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to NQF Level 3 activities in the wood preservation plant.
