PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can set up and operate log handling, sorting and storage facilities (log yard / deck) in wet processing area of the veneer, block board and plywood manufacturing environment, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Collect tools required for log handling and sorting in the log yard (Range: handling = movement, sorting, storage, measuring, recording, reporting)
  • Set up the log handling, sorting and storage facilities system (Range: facilities = people, tools and equipment)
  • Control the log yard operations
  • Control log yard throughput and quality
  • Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of log yard handling and recording equipment 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i. The environment, which can be described as the Wet Processing Area of a Veneer / Plywood / Block board Plant and specifically the log yard of the Wet Processing Area.
    ii. All personnel involved in the activities in the Wet Processing Area.
    iii. All material handled and processed in this log yard of the Wet Processing Area.
    iv. All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and
    environmental management procedures relating to the log yard.
    v. All the prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication procedures and
    schedules, tools and materials used in the log yard.
    vi. All prescribed log measuring, recording, handling and storage standards
    and procedures.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the activities of log handling, measuring, recording, sorting and storage in the Wet Processing Area.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

    Collect tools required for log handling and sorting in the log yard.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The log handling, sorting and storage tools are available and ensures the successful execution of all log yard operations according to work instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Handling = movement, sorting, storage, measuring, recording, reporting
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct tools for log handling and sorting are assembled at the required time as specified in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct assembly of prescribed log yard set up and operation tools proves that the Learner knows and understands the purpose and use of the above.

    Set up the log handling, sorting and storage facilities system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The log handling, sorting and storage system is set up correctly and ensures that logs are handled, sorted and stored in the most efficient manner as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct set up of the log handling, sorting and storage proves that the Learner knows and understands the purpose of the procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Control the log yard operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The log handling, sorting and storage facilities are controlled to ensure that the log yard operates optimally as required in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The control of the log handling, sorting and storage processes are carried out in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The successful control of the log handling, sorting and storage processes proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed controls. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Control log yard throughput and quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The log yard throughput is controlled in order to assure the availability and quality of acceptable logs as specified in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct controls procedures are carried out in the prescribed time limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The successful control of log yard throughput and quality proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed control procedures and product standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Carry out routine maintenance and lubrication of log yard handling and recording equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The routine maintenance and lubrication of the log handling, sorting and storing facilities is effectively executed and assures that the prescribed operational standards are met. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct routine maintenance and lubrication schedules are carried out in the prescribed time limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The Learner correctly completes the prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct completion of the routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and report proves that the Learner knows and understands the purpose of and the procedures of maintaining and lubricating log handling, sorting and storage facilities. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i. The measurement and recording of logs received, handled, sorted and stored in the log yard to prescribed standards;
    ii. The setting up and adjustment and operation of the system to receive, measure, record, sort store and move logs to prescribed standards, in the log yard;
    iii. The routine maintenance of the system and its component parts to prescribed standards;
    iv. The routine maintenance and lubrication of the debarking facility;
    v. The measurement and recording of logs processed by the debarking facility;
    vi. Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 3;
    vii. Competence in work procedures, safety and health measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
  • Participate in carrying out the prescribed production programme /work plan for the work area of the log yard.
  • Assist in training /coaching workers in the log yard and discussing with them and the relevant responsible person all aspects of their activities in this work area.

    Assume full responsibility for all tools and instruments used in the work area of the log yard.
