PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of inspecting and reporting on automotive system conditions. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under the supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2

    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Inspection includes visual, smell and feel senses.
  • Visual defects include cracks, distortions, burns, manufacturing flaws, leaks, missing bolts and nuts, worn components and electric/electronic systems not working.
  • Feeling defects include temperature differentials, loose bolts and connections, dents and roughness.
