PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for persons who carry out shore based activities and make up and prepare nets required for fishing operations.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan for net making or repairs.
  • Cut nets to plan.
  • Assemble, repair and maintain nets according to trawl plans. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Nets types that are required to be prepared for fishing operations may include but not limited to: trawl, pelagic, lobster, trek-nets and gooi-nets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan for net making or repairs. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Modifying; mending, replacing, strengthening, adjusting and tuning nets optimally. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Plans are interpreted and applied to the specified net type taking into account sector and legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment and materials needed are identified and costs calculated as per company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Material needs are assessed to meet required net plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Buoyancy is calculated to measure up to net size.

    Cut nets to plan.

    Rope types and twine types are identified to meet the specified plans.

    Assemble, repair and maintain nets according to trawl plans.

    Quality and sizes of meshes and nets are conforming to specified SABS and legislative requirements.

    Maintenance requirements of ropes are explained and executed as per the type of trawl application to defined company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Diameters and breaking strains of ropes are explained as per rope specification and usage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Knot and splicing types are identified and applied as per rope specification and usage.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
