PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard provides an introduction to transportation insurance. It is intended for learners in Short Term commercial and retail insurance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining transportation insurance.
  • Identifying the different products that a transportation insurance company offers
  • Analysing the role of transportation insurance in international trade.
  • Identifying events in the news that could impact on goods that are in transit. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Local and international trade.
  • Risks associated with cargo, hull and private craft.
  • Geographical situation, weather and climate, physical and political environment.
  • Modern piracy includes hijacking and terrorism.
  • Current Incoterms are EXW, FOB/FCA, CFR/CPT AND CIF/CIP.
  • Marine policy (MAR) Institute Cargo Clauses, Multimarkä and/or other policy wordings.
  • Classes of transportation insurance include, but are not limited to, imports, exports, goods in transit and storage.

    The concepts of general average and marine salvage are explained for a specific scenario.

    Identify the different products that a transportation insurance company offers.

    Three different classes of transportation insurance are named with examples.

    A cargo policy is analysed in terms of transit and storage of cargo.

    The risk attached to each transportation insurance product is indicated based on the Institute Cargo Clauses.

    The concept of trade is explained with reference to South African imports and exports.

    The concept of international trade is explained with reference to goods and raw materials and South Africa's main trade partners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The major trade routes are identified on a map and an indication is given of mode of transport, raw materials and manufactured goods that are transported along each route. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ports and facilities along major trade routes are indicated graphically. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Identify events in the news that could impact on goods that are in transit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Climate patterns and weather phenomena that can affect goods that are in transit are explained with reference to recent examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Geological events and incidents in the physical environment that can affect goods that are in transit are explained with reference to recent examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Examples of modern forms of piracy are identified and explained as a hazard in transportation insurance and examples are given of recent incidents of piracy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Conditions in ports that impact on the theft of containers and goods are identified and related to events in the socio-economic environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The effect of political risk on trade is explained with reference to recent examples.
