PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for intermediaries, underwriters, claim assessors, risk managers and intermediaries who sell insurance for timber plantations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Researching the types of trees grown in commercial timber plantations in South Africa.
  • Explaining the importance of the end market to the insurance of a commercial timber plantation.
  • Analysing the risks associated with commercial timber plantations in South Africa.
  • Applying knowledge of legislation and certification to the insurance of commercial timber plantations.
  • Analysing the terms and conditions in a policy document.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Tree types include pine, gum, wattle, poplar and special types.
  • Factors that cause fires and influence fire behaviour include, but are not limited to, climate, topography, weather, land ownership and internal and external land use patterns.
  • Legislation includes the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, (101 of 1998).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Research the types of trees grown in commercial timber plantations in South Africa.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between natural forests, plantations and unmanaged exotic tree stands is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tree types used for commercial timber plantations are researched with reference to the possible end use of each tree type. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the importance of the end market to the insurance of commercial timber plantations.

    The affect of the end market on management, risk and end value of a plantation is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relationship between tree species and end market is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic principles of the Faustman Formula as the basis of value are explained with reference to commercial plantations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of mean annual increment (MAI) is illustrated graphically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Net standard value at maturity is calculated as the basis of insurance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse the risks associated with commercial timber plantations in South Africa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors that cause fires and influence fire behaviour are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A fire risk survey is conducted to quantify the risk in a selected timber plantation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A commercial timber plantation risk is underwritten based on the outcome of the survey and the effect of the combined risk for the area.

    Apply knowledge of legislation and certification to the insurance of commercial timber plantations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Legislation that controls and governs the growing of commercial plantations is named and an indication is given of the purpose of each Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of the Department of Water and Forestry Affairs in regulating plantations is explained with reference to permits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The advantages of forestry certification are explained with reference to environmental and economic sustainability, legal compliance and social responsibility.

    Analyse the terms and conditions in a policy document.

    A policy wording and schedule are analysed to determine cover. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    General warranties are analysed and explained for a specific insurer.

    The general warranties attached to a policy are applied to a selected scenario.
