PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be working within a golf club environment, specialising in the golf retailing, added services to golf clubs, golf coaching, sports science and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished sports management and sports administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Planning a golf tournament.
  • Managing a golf tournament.
  • Conducting post tournament administration.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of, and applying the handicapping system in tournament planning and management.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan a golf tournament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The objectives of and reasons for tournament planning are understood so as to ensure a successful event for tournament planners, sponsors, players and the golf course involved. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Planning objectives include, but are not limited to, increasing customer participation, profits and sales, funding, and budget, product promotion, attracting sponsors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Planning meetings are held to ensure that all planning is done utilising the guidelines for tournaments and Pro-Ams. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tournament golf course is inspected prior to event to ensure that it complies with requirements and whether any specific local rules will need to be applied to the tournament. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection includes, but is not limited to, inspection aims, examination of course features and local rules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tournament plans are determined and documented in relation to tournaments and Pro-Am's. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tournament plans include, but are not limited to, rain preparation procedures, establishing and demarcating practice areas, appointing briefing and equipping greenstaff and referees, marking course to ensure fair and consistent implementation of rules, daily course set up procedures, setup of course for lady professionals, procedures for giving rulings, and dealing with problems during the tournament.

    Manage a golf tournament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedures for implementing plans are documented and implemented according to the objectives of the tournament. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tournament procedures include, but are not limited to, rain preparation procedures, pace of play and warning procedures, play off procedures, delaying start of play and interrupting play procedures, specific procedures for tournaments and Pro-Am's, starters briefs, procedures for recording results and serious complaints procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A Referee equipment list is developed and referees are supplied with the equipment they require. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Referee equipment includes, but is not limited to, draw sheets, local rules, radio, pace of play guidelines, pin positions, stopwatch, rules book, timing sheets, decision book, tournament rules card.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tournament play and procedures are monitored to ensure successful conduct of tournament or Pro-Am. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tournament reports are compiled according to PGA guidelines.

    Handicapping terminology is defined and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The procedure for the allotment of handicaps by affiliate clubs is explained and described in the context of tournaments and stroke and match play.

    The procedure for the alteration of handicaps is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose and function of the handicap committee is described as it relates to different types of golf matches. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The handicap record sheet is described and its completion demonstrated for input into records. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Score cards are checked and results recorded utilising handicap information.

    Various rules of scoring are explained and described to golfers.
