PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to describe current legislation regarding authority required before opening a lock. They will also be able to open a lock using specialised tools causing least destruction to the lock and its housing.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Open a lock.
  • Demonstrate the use of specialised tools.
  • Explain lock opening methods.

    Opening of locks refers to the unlocking of devices (locks).

    Open a lock. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reasons why authority should be obtained when opening a lock is explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reasons must also include reference to current legislation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lock opening method is selected by inspecting the locking mechanism. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Locking mechanisms must also include reference to lock components. Choice of opening methods must take into account the least destructive method.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Locking mechanisms is inspected in order to ensure its integrity.

    Mechanical integrity is maintained on completion of the operation.

    Lock opening procedures are described in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lock opening methods are compared in relation to specific job specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least 2 specifications should be provided one of which must be a domestic lock and one vehicle lock.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mechanical integrity is explained on completion of the operation.
