    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard will be useful to people who work in the audio-visual production industry and has to edit programmes using off-line video editing equipment.
    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Prepare media and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The source tapes are correctly identified and obtained in time for the session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Where the format of source materials is not suitable for the equipment to be used, arrangements are made for them to be transferred to the appropriate format in time for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Relevant information about source materials is noted accurately and in sufficient detail to enable the materials to be accessed and used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Original materials are handled and stored safely as required by enterprise practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Sufficient recording media is prepared to last the session. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. The operation of editing equipment is checked and confirmed as operational prior to use and appropriate action taken to resolve any faults or problems.

    7. Faults or problems, if any, are identified promptly, remedial action taken in terms of own responsibility and faults reported to the relevant person.

    1. Editing equipment is controlled as required by manufacturer's operational instructions.

    2. Edit points are identified precisely and located exactly to meet task specifications.

    3. Where applicable, the use of various reference codes is managed correctly.

    4. Equipment is operated to recorded selected source materials onto the edit tape.

    Identification of edit points, split edits, preview edits, make edits, review edits, insert or assemble.

    5. Source sounds are recorded onto the required audio track and synchronism is maintained where necessary.

    6. Audio levels are monitored and adjusted to maintain the required signal strength.

    7. The technical quality of edited materials is reviewed in terms of meeting the required technical standard and in sufficient detail to identify potential problems.

    8. The cause and source of potential problems are investigated and where original materials are judged to be unusable, alternative materials are used.

    9. Paper logs or computer logs are generated accurately for the on-line edit.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Providers of learning towards this unit standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of the relevant ETQA.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

    Demonstrate an understanding that the production world is a set of related systems and that problem-solving do not exist in isolation. 

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
    1. Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
    2. Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
    3. Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
    4. The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
    5. The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
    6. All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
