PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to use brick size and block size hollow units to build single leaf and cavity walls and prepare walls to receive concrete floors, roof slabs and further surface applications in accordance with the design and construction method specified in working drawings ensuring that National Building and Occupational Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.

This competence complements the other masonry competencies and contributes to the development of a professional community of Masonry practitioners, who are able to use Science and Technology responsibly and cost-effectively. It should result in improved quality and service delivery in Masonry. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking:
  • Positioning of movement joints if required - the distances between movement joints and where in the building movement joints should be installed.
  • Making provision for future services - perhaps construct and arch in the foundation walling for future services to be installed.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively:
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order to ensure that the construction of masonry walls is carried out effectively and the cost to company for the frequent replacement of tools and equipment is minimised.
  • Plan work so that all walls are built within the specified deadlines.
  • Check the set up of doors and window frames on a daily basis to ensure that the settings have not been accidentally disturbed by site personnel or people who may have visited the building site in your absence.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information:
  • Read and interpret the working drawing carefully and thoroughly so that specified wall dimensions are correctly transferred when setting out the gauge rod.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, symbolic, and/or language skills in various modes:
  • Confirm your understanding of all specified requirements with the client/architect before commencing with the work at hand so as to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone.
  • Communicate in a clear and audible manner when issuing instructions to team members so that all verbal instructions are clearly understood and can be carried out as required.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environments and the health of others:
  • Check the safety and security of scaffolding at the beginning of each new work day to minimise accident or injury to yourself and other team members.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems, by recognising that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation:
  • Ensure that materials, tools and equipment used to build walls is safely and securely stored and protected on the building site to minimise the risk of theft, accident or injury to site personnel or visitors to the building site.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO CONTRIBUTING
Reflecting on and exploring a variety of strategies to learn more effectively:
  • Assess the work that you have completed to identify areas that can be improved on when building walls using concrete hollow units in the future.
