PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners in a work environment. It is designed to raise moral standards as a counter to potential or real corruption within a work environment. The focus is on ethics and the learner, and does not include corporate governance. This Unit Standard is intended for junior managers of organisations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the concept of personal ethics in relation to the moral compass.
  • Describing the role of a code of conduct in a work environment, according to ethical principles.
  • Upholding the code of conduct within the work team. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • 'Code of conduct' may be a written document or an implicit value system.
  • 'Moral compass' explains the origins of ethical behaviour under two axes, namely individual versus collective, or group; and behaviour versus outcome.
  • 'Area of responsibility' includes, but is not limited to, cost centre, section, department or team.
  • 'Junior managers' include, but are not limited to, team leaders, supervisors, foremen and section heads.
  • 'Standard Operating Procedures' (SOPs) may comprise formal written documents or accepted practices in the organisation.
  • 'Organisation' includes but is not limited to, workplace, work context, work unit, company, department or section.

    Explain the concept of ethics in relation to the 'moral compass'.

    The components of the 'moral compass' are described according to theory and practice.

    The team leader identifies team members' positions on the 'moral compass' according to observed behaviour.

    The relationship between ethics and the constitution is explained according to group and individual rights and responsibilities.

    Describe the role of a code of conduct in a work environment according to ethical principles.

    Code of conduct is explained, with reference to organisational documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Code of conduct is compared to the principles in the Constitution and the 'moral compass' within the context of the organisation.

    Uphold the code of conduct within the work team.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Potential conflict between a personal value system and an organisational code of conduct is identified, with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of non-compliance with a code are explained, with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Aspects of the code of conduct are applied according to Standard Operating Procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Examples of deviations, past or present, from the code of conduct, are identified and remedial action, if appropriate, is taken according to Standard Operating Procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of reporting deviations in areas beyond team leader's area of responsibility is explained according to the code of conduct.

  • This Unit Standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator registered with the relevant accredited ETQA.
  • Assessors should be in possession of a relevant qualification that is at least one level higher than the level of this unit standard.
