PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to identify and respond to factors, faults or incidents that increase the safety and security risk for staff and customers. This includes the monitoring of emergency procedures, safety and security and consulting with specialists where development is needed.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Outline and demonstrate the legislative and company procedures applicable to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Explain organisational procedures to ensure the safety of staff and customers.
  • Implement organisational procedures to ensure the security of staff and customers.
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of the health, safety and security procedures of the organisation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant health and safety regulations pertaining to area of responsibility are identified and an explanation given of how they are accommodated in the health and safety procedures of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety and security procedures are demonstrated in the context of a drill or exercise. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security and safety procedures may include: fire exits and fire procedures, first aid procedures, evacuation procedures, access procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the evacuation plan and how evacuation routes for the building can be accessed.

    An explanation is given of alternative routes to follow should a route be inaccessible or unusable.

    Safety procedures for avoiding accidents in the workplace are implemented in compliance with legislative requirements.

    Regular inspections are conducted to check that equipment is maintained in line with security standards.

    Potential problems with the implementation of security procedures are identified and communicated to relevant staff members.

    Recommendations are made at management level on adjustments or improvements to security procedures.

    Ways in which potential hazards can be eliminated or reduced are devised for implementation in accordance with organisational procedures and legislative requirements.

    A list is compiled of specialists that would be able to provide input on the health, safety and security procedures that need to be updated.
