PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
On completion of this unit standard the learner will be able to devise preventative maintenance programmes that will ensure a clean, safe and secure environment for all interest groups. On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Develop and implement a preventative maintenance programme.
  • Maintain proper care of machinery.
  • Develop an inspection schedule.

    The principles of a preventative maintenance programme are listed focussing on cost reduction for the organisation.

    The need for a preventative maintenance programme is identified according to the principles of preventative maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A preventative maintenance programme is developed for the organisation in terms of its operational ethos.

    A preventative maintenance programme is implemented according to organisational procedures and policy.

    Maintain care of machinery/equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machinery and equipment are kept clean according to cleaning schedule for each machine/piece of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Servicing of machinery and equipment is scheduled according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faults in machinery and equipment are identified and appropriate action taken to effect repairs.

    Key areas requiring for regular and routine inspection are identified so as to enable the drawing up of an inspection schedule.

    An inspection schedule is drawn up to ensure that proper inspections are done to ensure the health and safety of customers and staff and for aesthetic reasons. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Staff roles in the inspection process are identified and communicated to all staff members. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Inspections are performed according to schedule and in accordance with organisational policy and procedures.

    Reports are submitted to management once the inspections have taken place.
