PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people in the automotive industry who are expected to test and repair components on an engine cooling system.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of heat transfer.
  • Understand the functions of cooling system components.
  • Test the engine cooling system and locate any faults.
  • Repair cooling system faults.
  • Conduct post repair activities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • The ability to work safely in an automotive workshop.
  • The ability to use hand tools correctly. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Repair to the cooling system does not include repairs to the radiator.
  • Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • The practical assessment evidence must be obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.
  • Engines include multi cylinder 2 and 4 stroke diesel or petrol engines with an engine capacity of not less than 1300cc.

    The basic principles of heat transfer are explained in terms of generally accepted scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of heat transfer is explained in terms of conduction, convection and radiation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of an engine cooling system is explained in terms of optimising engine performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Types of engine cooling systems are identified and their method of operation is explained in terms of regulating engine temperature. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand the functions of cooling system components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Liquid and air cooled engines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The location of each cooling system component is identified in relation to other components in the cooling cycle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The function of each component is explained in terms of its contribution to controlling the engine operating temperature. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The main components of the cooling system are identified in terms of their purpose and function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of each component is explained in accordance with overall engine operating temperature. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Test the engine cooling system and locate any faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal safety, safety of others, equipment and vehicle safety.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suitable tools and equipment are selected to enable the cooling system to be adequately tested. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with their design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cooling system faults are identified and isolated in accordance with workplace and engine manufacturer requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coolant solution concentration, thermostat operation, coolant blockages, water pump and fan drive system operation, sensors, oil cooling systems, corrosion, erosion, contamination, leaks, shutter operation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Parts that cannot be feasibly repaired are identified and replacement parts are sourced in accordance with company specific procurement procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Pulleys, belts and drive hubs of a belt driven fan are checked for wear and damage in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Blades of the cooling fan are checked for damage and cracks in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Repair cooling system faults.

    Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal safety - handling inhibitor, hot pressurised cooling system, keeping clear of moving parts, protective clothing, no loose objects, being aware of sharp edges; safety of others; equipment and vehicle safety.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suitable tools and equipment are selected to enable cooling system faults to be repaired. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with their design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Coolant leaks and their causes are repaired to restore full serviceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Corroded and damaged parts are replaced in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Faulty components are replaced with working parts in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Blockages in any coolant or engine passages are cleared without damage to components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Parts that cannot be feasibly repaired are replaced with other operational components.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.

    The following particular issues should be taken into consideration when assessing against this unit standard:
  • The assessment must take place in a fully equipped workshop where all the tools and equipment required for the task are available.
  • The engine performance once it has been started will provide additional evidence of the candidate's ability to repair a cooling system.
  • Assessment must take place against at least one petrol and one diesel engine.
  • Assessment must take place against at least one air cooled and one liquid cooled engine.
