PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are required to manage substance abuse in the workplace in terms of accommodating limitations, dealing with emergencies, providing the necessary facilities and being proactive in providing ongoing support.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and addiction.
  • Describing the implications and consequences of substance abuse for the individual and the organisation.
  • Explaining the manager's role in dealing with intoxicated and addicted employees.
  • Explaining the recovery process and the implications for managers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 2.

  • Indication of signs and symptoms excludes diagnosis.
  • Behaviour refers to interpersonal relationships.
  • The addiction process refers to the twelve-step process and variations according to the type of substance abuse.

    The concepts of substance abuse and addiction are explained with examples.

    Clusters of symptoms that indicate possible substance abuse are identified in a specific situation in order to make a management decision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Patterns of behaviour in the workplace that indicate dependency are identified in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stages in the dependency process are outlined with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The dangers of managers making an unqualified clinical diagnosis are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the implications and consequences of substance abuse and addiction for the individual and the organisation.

    The impact of substance abuse on an individual is explained with reference to personal consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of substance abuse on co-workers is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between substance abuse and work performance is explained with reference to agreed performance standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of substance abuse on an organisation is explained with reference to productivity, cost, risks, safety and legal implications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the manager's role in dealing with intoxicated and addicted employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process to be followed in dealing with intoxication at work is explained with reference to an organisation's policies and sound legal practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process to be followed in dealing with addiction or dependency is explained with reference to the team member's or manager's role in intervening in the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Situations where it would be necessary to refer an employee for assistance are identified and an indication is given of available professional support structures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Issues of confidentiality, discrimination and professional and ethical conduct in dealing with intoxication or addiction are discussed with reference to the role of the manager. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the recovery process and the implications for managers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The addiction treatment process is outlined and an indication is given of the importance of the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concepts of recovery and relapse are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    High-risk situations that could contribute to a relapse are identified for a specific example or case and suggestions are made as to how managers and colleagues could support the treatment process.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
