PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who are involved in community projects especially volunteerism. The focus is on the role of the individual in community development.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining community development and the importance of individual participation in developing a community.
  • Conducting a situational analysis in a specific community.
  • Reflecting on own expertise and skills to inform a personal contribution plan.
  • Designing a plan for personal involvement in a specific community project. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is existing programmes or the creation of a new project. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain community development and the importance of individual participation in developing a community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of community development is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Factors that can enhance or inhibit community development are named with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include, but are not limited to, community dynamics, community construction, governance, centres of power and influence.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The advantages for the community where individuals actively contribute to community development are discussed and an indication is given of the consequences of non-involvement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The personal benefits of involvement in community development are discussed with reference to personal growth and development. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct a situational analysis in a specific community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A survey is conducted to establish the basic demographics of the community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The leaders and government structures in a community are identified and an indication is given of the role of each in the specific community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A selection of community stakeholders is interviewed in order to determine the community dynamics and community construction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Existing community projects are identified and an indication is given of the level of community involvement in each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Resources and services in the community are identified and an indication is given of the needs of the community in terms of resources and services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A community profile is developed that collates the information and indicates possible areas for personal involvement. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Possible areas may be existing projects or own initiated projects.

    Reflect on own expertise to inform a personal contribution plan.

    Own interests, skills, strengths and limitations are analysed and matched to the identified possible areas of involvement.

    Ways to overcome personal limitations are identified in order to acquire the necessary skills.

    A project is selected for individual contribution to the specific community.

    Design a plan for personal involvement in a specific community project.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A proposal for individual involvement in a selected community is presented to the stakeholders to obtain buy-in. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The details of the proposed community project and personal involvement in the programme are outlined in an action plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The action plan may include, but is not limited to, resources, time frames, allocation of responsibility, task descriptions, deliverables and monitoring and review processes.
