PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to distinguish dangerous goods from general cargo and explain the procedures necessary to comply with the requirements for the storage, surface freight and air freight of dangerous goods.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Defining dangerous goods.
  • Explaining dangerous goods classification, packing, labelling and storage requirements.
  • Explaining the specialised requirements for the transport of goods by air.
  • Explaining the specialised requirements for the transport of goods by surface.

    The need for specialised treatment of dangerous goods is explained in order to distinguish dangerous goods from general cargo.

    The consequences of treating dangerous goods as general cargo are explained using examples.

    Explain dangerous goods classification, packing, labelling and storage requirements.

    The necessity for separating dangerous goods from other cargo is explained in the context of storage and transport.

    The consequences of not correctly classifying dangerous goods are explained in terms of possible loss and/or damage to life and property.

    Explain the specialised requirements for the transport of goods by air.

    The roles of International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) are explained in the regulation of air transport of dangerous goods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The localities of the different dangerous goods transport provisions are explained in terms the contents of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The documentation which needs to be prepared by shippers of dangerous goods is identified in the context of airfreight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The fields for dangerous goods carriage are identified on the neutral airway bill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not applying the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations are explained in the context of airfreight forwarding.

    The role of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is explained in the regulation of local transport of dangerous goods by surface.

    The consequences of not applying the IMDG Code and SABS Code of Practice are explained in the context of surface freight forwarding.
