PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
An individual who has achieved this unit standard is capable of participating in the handling and distribution of pharmacy stock with particular reference to the monitoring, picking and dispatching of stock. The individual will further have an understanding of the impact of the cold chain and security on stock control. In addition the individual will be able to handle returned products.

It is assumed that the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • The Unit Standards:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Monitor stock levels and products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Working stock levels are checked and maintained according to standard operating procedure and discrepancies are reported to the authorised person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dated and slow moving items are identified, reported to the authorised person and dealt with as per instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality of the stock is monitored by visual inspection and deviations are reported to the authorised person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept 'cold chain' is explained and examples are given to enhance the explanation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Irregularities in the cold chain are reported in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Expired or damaged stock for return or destruction, are reported to authorised person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    All required documentation is completed according to legal requirements and organisational policies and procedures.

    Pick and prepare stock items for dispatch.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal requirements pertaining to the picking and distribution of stock are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stock items are selected according to appropriately authorised order or picking list. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Where required, picked stock is checked by the appropriately authorised persons. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stock for dispatch and or transit is packed and stored in a manner which will maintain the integrity of the product. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Integrity includes minimising breakages, maintaining the cold chain and ensuring security and safety with special regard to hazardous stock.

    Appropriate steps are taken to ensure the security of the stock order according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Labelling, dispatch information and dispatch documentation is prepared and verified as being accurate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Stock order is transferred to the appropriate dispatch area as per organisational and legal requirements.

    Security requirements are adhered to and goods are signed over to couriers according to organisational standards.

    Packaging is verified as being intact and in accordance with cold chain maintenance where applicable, to ensure product integrity.

    Where appropriate, the medicine register is completed in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements.

    Returned stock is received and placed in designated area according to standard operating procedures.

    Relevant documentation is completed and necessary authorisation is obtained according to legislative and organisational requirements.

    Returned items are disposed of, or returned to stock according to instructions received from the authorised person.
