PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for those individuals in the production environment who are responsible for handling and storing materials for the metals production process. They must be able to identify materials required for the process and the implications of choosing incorrect materials.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Check material stock levels for metals production.
  • Layout materials for use in the production process.
  • Work safely with due care for self, fellow workers, equipment, materials and environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of materials in the metal production process.

    Check material stock levels for metals production.

    Materials include but is not limited to flux, alloys, prepared scrap, dycote, holcote, scrapers, launder dams, launder covers, knife gates, botting cone, dam blades, wallpaper glue, cerablanket, graphite rotor, cathode lining material, mortors, ramming paste, coke and pitch, alumina, soda briquettes, butts, paste handling.

    The production process is maintained through ensuring the availability of materials.

    The implications of delays for the production process are explained in terms of emphasising the costs of delays and the need for efficiency.

    Materials are stored neatly and safely to ensure that removal for use is performed with ease. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Storage places include stores, areas set aside for holding materials on a temporary basis, at or near production equipment, kanban, tool racks.

    Operations for laying out materials are conducted according to standard operating procedures.

    Hazardous material is identified and reported so that appropriate action can be taken timeously to prevent harm and/or injury.

    The implications of supplying incorrect materials are explained in terms of costs pertaining to loss of production.
