PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of applying sealers and cavity fillers on vehicles to prevent ingress of water, thereby causing rust or corrosion, reduce noise on vehicles, and prevent stone chips as necessary.

This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is an elective unit standard for a spray painter. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for spray painting vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Identify the various types of paint, primers, material and their uses.
  • Perform surface preparation on a body panel.
  • Perform masking and de-masking on a vehicle.
  • Select and use vehicle lifting equipment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Bare metal is primed before application of sealer.
  • Only polyurethane sealers are to be used. No acrylic or water based sealers are included in the scope of this unit standard.

    Demonstrate knowledge of application of sealers and cavity fillers.

    The purpose of using sealers and cavity fillers is explained in terms of the manufacturer's design.

    Where and how to position sealer is explained in terms of the function to be performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of accurate masking is explained in relation to achieving the required finished in a specific area and not causing contamination of other areas.

    Consequences of not applying sealer correctly are explained in terms of effectiveness of the application and resultant problems.

    Methods of removing old sealer are explained in accordance with accepted workshop practices.

    Consequences of applying heat to body panels are explained in relation to the effect on composite structure and rust protection.

    Existing sealer is removed in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Surfaces are prepared in accordance with workplace instructions.

    Preparing includes cleaning, feather edging, sanding, priming and masking.

    Masking provides adequate protection to surrounding areas and ensures sufficient access to required application area.

    Other vehicles in close proximity are covered for protection in accordance with workplace requirements.

    Tools and equipment required to apply the sealer and cavity filler are identified and checked for functionality prior to commencing with the task.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
