PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for those involved in ancillary health care and will be useful for health workers and lay counsellors encountering abused persons in the course of their work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing signs of possible abuse.
  • Describing the reporting procedures and sources of referral pertaining to the abused person.
  • Supporting the abused person.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Abuse includes, but is not limited to, physical, emotional and sexual abuse and applies to people of all ages and both genders.

    Describe the signs of possible abuse.

    The different types of possible abuse are explained with examples.

    The signs of abuse are identified in terms of own observations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Signs of abuse include, but are not limited, to bruises of varying stages visible on the body, repeated/frequent hospital/medical treatment for injuries and/or fractures, inappropriate clothing for weather conditions to cover bruises/injuries, inappropriate awareness of sexuality in children, abrupt changes in behaviour, over solicitousness by a care-giver for a charge (child or elderly person), excessive clinging by a child to a particular adult, inappropriate malnutrition, sleeping difficulties.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The legal obligations for the need to report abuse are described and related to various examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe knowledge of the reporting procedures and sources of referral pertaining to the abused person.

    A report of possible abuse is submitted to the appropriate authorities or relevant line manager.

    Possible sources of referral are named for various age groups.

    The various procedures relating to reporting are explained with examples.

    Sensitivity to confidentiality issues and disclosure is emphasized and the necessity for disclosure is explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Support an abused person. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Support includes but is not limited to accompanying the person in the initial stages of abuse, following up to ensure that problems have been addressed.

    The extent to which support must be provided is identified in relation to the specific case. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of empathy is explained and demonstrated when dealing with an abused person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of identifying a relevant person as own support is explained and such support is obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All records and reports pertaining to abuse cases are regularly updated, kept highly confidential and discussed only with the professionals directly involved with the case.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

    The learner is required to identify the possibility of child abuse through observed cases at clinic level. Support is to be provided under supervision.

    Assessment:

    Assessment of the unit standard may include observed role play on facilitating disclosure, testimonies from co-workers who mentor the learner, and a portfolio of evidence, which includes a case that has been assigned to the learner with all the relevant documentation.
