PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard will be able to describe some of the key concepts pertaining to loads that are lifted by lifting machines. Operators of different lifting machines also ought to know how loads are configured/constituted for them to be safe enough to lift.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Describing the physical properties of loads.
  • Identifying and explaining hazardous substances that constitute a load.
  • Handling and moving a load.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    These loads are those that are prepared for lifting using lifting equipment. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the physical properties of loads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of load is described in terms of the material that constitutes a load. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Type of load includes but is not limited to solid, liquid, breakable, bendable.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of complex and regular loads are described in terms of the differences between them and how they ought to be handled. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Complex loads include:
  • Unequal weight distribution, eccentric loading, irregular shape and proportion, with or without lifting points.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concept of centre of gravity is explained with respect to preparing loads for lifting machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of leverage is explained in relation to the load and capacity charts of a particular machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The concept of load rating is explained in relation to the load radius, height, stability and operational area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The physical shape and dimensions of loads are described in terms of selecting an appropriate lifting machine for the lifting operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consideration is given to load size, shape, weight/mass, height, volume.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and explain hazardous substances that constitute a load. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of loads consisting of hazardous substances is described in terms of the relevant classes of dangerous goods and precautionary measures required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The symbols used to indicate dangerous and hazardous substances are identified and an indication is given of why the hazard warning is necessary for each class, including the consequences of non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of inadequate knowledge about a dangerous or hazardous load are explained to emphasise the inherent dangers of these loads. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Move and store a hazardous load. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Legislation and accompanying regulations relating to hazardous substances are described with regard to their handling, moving and storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different hazardous substances are selected and discussed in terms of the risks involved in terms of handling and storage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate storage facilities for hazardous loads are identified to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The handling method of different types of loads are described in line with correct procedures for each case. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Loads are stacked according to regulations and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The lifting machine selected is appropriate to the type, nature and size of the load and is used according manufacturer specifications. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
