PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to maintain and set up chipper knives and anvils in chipper machines in a Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Service a set of used/blunt chipper knives from a chipper used in the Lumber Mill.
  • Service a worn anvil from a chipper used in a Lumber Mill according to company's procedures.
  • Install a serviced set of knives and anvil in a chipper according to standard operating procedures.
  • Check wood chip quality of a serviced chipper. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the detail of Saw Doctoring in the Lumber Mill.
  • Knowledge of workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment including equipment, tools and instruments which can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill.
  • All personnel involved in the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All material handled and processed in the .Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed maintenance and set up procedures and schedules, tools and materials used for chipper knives and anvils in chipper machine in Lumber Mill.
  • All the saws, knives and cutters handled and processed in the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in Saw Doctoring and specifically to maintain and set up chipper knives and anvils used in chipper machines in the Lumber Mill.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and the ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.

    The installation of serviced chipper knives and anvil(s) in a chipper used in the Lumber Mill is performed according to specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Check wood chip quality of a serviced chipper. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Features that determine the quality of a wood chip of a serviced chipper are described according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The checking of wood chip quality of a serviced chipper used in the Lumber Mill is carried out according to company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are identified and corrective measures taken to sort them out according to worksite procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
