PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners who are already managers of functions or aspiring to become managers of functions. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sector and of the society by providing competent function managers who are able to manage and improve the strategic partner relationships of the function within and outside of the entity.

The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills required to manage the relationship with strategic partners to improve the performance of the function and the entity.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Identify the strategic partners and key drivers that achieve the strategy of the function.
  • Evaluate the contribution of strategic partners towards the strategy of the function.
  • Develop an implementation plan to enhance relationships with strategic partners. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 5. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Strategic partners include service providers, suppliers, manufacturers, financial institutions and insurance companies, referral businesses, trade associations, regulatory and local authorities, shareholders, other functions of the entity and staff.
  • Function refers to the core task or responsibility carried out by a department, directorate or group within an organisation or entity.

    Identify strategic partners and key drivers that achieve the strategy of the function.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Key strategic partners of the partnership are analysed in terms of what benefits or advantages they derive from the function and what the function derives from them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role and purpose of each strategic partner is analysed to demonstrate their respective importance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The financial and economic impact that each partner has on the function is assessed with a view to determining which are financially viable relationships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and techniques are developed to assess the value of the strategic relationships in relation to the entity and the function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The needs and requirements of the function are assessed in relation to its need for strategic partners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The current status and probable future status of strategic relationships (in terms of a trajectory) are evaluated to determine the impact on the strategy of the function/entity.

    Evaluate the contribution of strategic partners towards the strategy of the function.

    Metrics are developed as assessment tools to evaluate relationships of the function. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Metrics refers to any type of measurement used to gauge some quantifiable component of a company's performance and includes key performance indicators (KPIs), industry benchmarks or any other appropriate method or form of measurement or indicators.

    Relevant information and data is gathered as required by the metrics.

    Appropriate evaluation techniques are developed to analyse the information and data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Successes achieved and identified critical issues are analysed in terms of contribution to the strategy of the function.

    Each strategic relationship is assessed in terms of its contribution to the corporate brand of the function.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Intra-function and inter-function relationships are managed and promoted to sustain better relationships within the entity, based on vision and mission statements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Possible conflict between strategic partners is managed through conflict resolution processes to maintain the performance of the function/entity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of strategic relationships between the function/entity and the sector and beyond is analysed for the purpose of developing an implementation plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Critical success factors are analysed for inclusion in the implementation plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Incidents and practices that may affect strategic relationships are investigated in order to implement corrective or preventative measures.

    Appropriate tools and techniques are identified for each strategic partner as per the implementation plan.

    Changes to the status of the relationships are tracked and evaluated in terms of the implementation plan.

    The implementation plan is monitored in order to make adjustments where required.
