The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain the weather patterns and terminology. They will also be able to use shipboard meteorological instruments and identify the various sources of local weather information.

    Explain weather terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The term/concept of wind is explained according to the international weather definition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Beaufort Scale of wind force is described and used to estimate the strength of the wind and its direction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The method of estimating the strength of the wind and its direction is explained and demonstrated from the appearance of the sea surface. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Precipitation, rain, drizzle, hail, snow and sleet are defined with practical examples of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fog, mist and haze are defined and their affects on visibility explained with examples which will affect shipping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Methods of estimating the visibility at sea by day and by night are described and the limitations of the methods are described with shipping specific examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The ten basic cloud types are pointed out, named and the basic conditions under which they occur explained with examples.

    The stages in the life cycle of a polar front depression in the southern hemisphere and the usual movement of the front are described with examples and using the appropriate terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The weather experienced during the passage of a cold front in the southern hemisphere is described with the aid of a diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A family of depressions is described according to international definitions.

    Describing local seasonal weather and sea conditions.

    The currents and seasonal weather patterns on the South African coast are described with sector specific examples.

    The formation and occurrence of abnormal waves is described on the eastern seaboard of South Africa.

    The local winds are described with examples of their causes.

    The basic principle of an aneroid barometer is explained with shipping specific examples.

    The function of a hygrometer is explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The basic principles of wind sensors are explained with examples of their use and application for ships. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ordinary readings of wind speed are explained and recorded in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    The process of reading the atmospheric pressure from an aneroid barometer is explained and demonstrated to the nearest millibar.

    The process of reading the temperature from a thermometer (wet and dry bulb) is explained and demonstrated to the nearest whole degree.

    The sources of weather information are identified in terms of their availability to local shipping.

    The appropriate local weather bulletins and their contents are identified and explained with shipping specific examples.

    Services provided for local weather information are identified and the type of information provided explained, with examples of local storm warnings.
