The person credited with this unit standard is able to perform basic sheet metal work in terms of fabricating the sheet metal to specification as required to conduct repairs and/or maintenance activities.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting the appropriate sheet metal.
  • Cutting sheet metal.
  • Forming/Bending sheet metal.
  • Finishing the item to specification.
  • Keeping the workplace safe and productive.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of sheet metal are described in terms of properties and application for different purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of cutting and forming are explained in terms of the effect on the properties of the sheet metal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    End product specifications are accurately determined from drawings and requests. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but not limited to material length, diameter and strength, and angles and shapes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Material lists and specifications are compiled in accordance with the required end product specifications.

    Cut sheet metal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate cutting method is selected and the selection explained in terms of end product requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety equipment is selected and used in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of safety equipment may include but is not limited to safety boots, gloves, eye protection, overalls, leather apron and safety screens.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Material is prepared for cutting according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The preparation may include but is not limited to measuring and marking for cutting, securing the material and set up and safety checks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cutting equipment is prepared in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The preparation may include but is not limited to the selection of correct equipment for the task (hot and cold cutting process) and set up and safety checks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The material is cut to the desired dimension in terms of end product requirements.

    Form/Bend sheet metal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate forming or bending method is selected and explained in terms of end product requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety equipment is selected and used in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    Material is prepared for forming/bending in terms of end product requirements.

    Preparation may include but is not limited to measuring and marking for forming or bending.

    The required jigs are selected and prepared for forming/bending according to operational specification of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Forming/Bending equipment is prepared in accordance with operational specification of equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may include but is not limited to the selection of correct equipment for the task (hot and cold bending or forming process) and set up and safety checks.

    The material is secured to prevent movement during forming/bending according to operational specification of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The material is formed or bent to the desired shape and dimension in terms of end product requirements.

    The item is inspected and deviations from specification are accurately determined in terms of end product requirements.

    Corrections are made to ensure that the item is finished to specification.

    The material is finished off to remove sharp edges and stress raisers in terms of end product requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Occupational safety, health and environmental protection measures are adhered to as provided for by workplace policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Occupational safety, health and environmental protection measures may include but are not limited to measures to protect the person and other employees from personal injury and health risks(eyes, ears, lungs, feet, body, head); prevention of contamination of the environment; functionality and safety of tools and equipment; use of and compliances to warning signs and symbols and compliance with demarcated areas.

    Workshop administration and documentation are completed in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Housekeeping duties are performed in accordance with standard workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Housekeeping procedures may include but are not limited to keeping the work area neat and organised and disposing of and/or recycling waste.

    End of task duties are performed in accordance with standard workplace instructions.

    The end of task duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Reporting unsafe or dysfunctional tools and equipment.
