PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard develops competencies in understanding the theoretical aspects of tooling, the application of tooling techniques, changing and adjusting tooling and identifying non-conformances. Many machines in the automotive components environment depend heavily on the installation of the right type of tooling for various activities, for example, the presses used for shaping car doors and bonnets.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:

    Housekeeping standards are applied and improved to prevent hazards, contamination and possible interference with the running of a machine.

    The implications of using incorrect tooling are discussed in terms of impact on quality, safety, time and cost. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Defective tooling is identified and corrected according to standard operating procedures. The consequences of not being able to identify defective tooling are described in terms of the impact on the production process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The root causes of all non-conformances are identified to detect trends and take corrective action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The time factor in rectifying non-conformance is discussed with respect to costs and production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Non-conformances in tooling and products are reported timeously to appropriate personnel according to company procedures.
