PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners are able to use technical literature and information systems to assist them in following electrical circuits/systems in a vehicle, identifying and locating electrical components in these circuits or systems and, where applicable, obtaining further information on the purpose, functioning and testing of these systems. This knowledge and skills should empower them to understand a broad range of basic automotive electrical systems including, but not limited to, lighting, signaling, instrumentation, ventilation and similar fundamental circuits. It also provides foundational competence for further unit standards in autotronics both at this and higher levels.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate technical information in an auto electrical (autotronics) context.
  • Use technical information to locate, remove and test auto electrical devices and components.
  • Differentiate between the wiring harnesses on a vehicle.
  • Locate joints and earth points in the various harnesses.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    All work carried out in this Unit Standard must comply with safe working practices and standard operating procedures. This includes the correct use of personal protective clothing for all activities carried out. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate the ability to locate and interpret technical information in an auto electrical (autotronics) context. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Workshop technical information includes electronic information systems, circuit diagrams, workshop manuals, company specific repair standards as well as technical service manuals.
  • Sources for the information include the internet or company specific workshop information systems.
  • Circuit diagrams may include at least six of the following: park, tail, stop, reverse, head and interior light, indicators, hazard lights, instrumentation, rear demister, interior fan, hooter and wiper, and related circuits. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vehicle's details/description are used to locate the vehicle's technical information/data from various information sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The accessed data is checked to ensure if it matches the system or circuit being described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The information is interpreted according to standard procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Individual circuits are extracted from diagrams and reproduced or traced in a simplified form (schematic). 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Use technical information to locate, remove and test auto electrical devices and components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Auto electrical devices and components include the following: fuses, fuse boxes, relays, relay carriers, circuit breakers, fusible links, plugs, earth and feed points, junction points, switches, gauges, sensors, globes, and associated systems and components.
  • Components include park light, headlight, brake light, reverse light, door, interior fan, rear demister, indicator, hazard lights, hooter and wiper switches and electronic control boxes, and associated components.
  • Testing equipment includes multitester, diagnostic tester and LED test lamp. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trim and associated components are removed and fitted according to standard procedure and without damage to vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Auto electrical devices are located using circuit diagrams and workshop manuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Auto electrical safety devices are compared to technical specifications to ensure no damage to system or vehicle in the event of a short circuit and/ or to ensure that the information being used matches the circuits/devices being inspected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Manuals are consulted for fitting locations to help identify components and to remove components according to the procedures described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A simple check is performed to see that part numbers/variants of the system are correct. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Components are tested and their mode of operation explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Differentiate between the wiring harnesses on a vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate sections of the workshop manual/information system are consulted for information on harness sections. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Harness sections may include but are not limited to main, dashboard, interior, rear, and roof.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Trim and associated components are removed and fitted according to procedure and without damage to vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different connectors are clearly identified in order to ensure correct testing and diagnosis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different harnesses and their primary functions in terms of the main circuits they support are identified and described to confirm understanding thereof. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Locate joints and earth points in the various harnesses. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Joints may include battery positive (30), earth points (31), ignition (15), and various lighting points.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relationship of joints to the electrical circuit/system is explored (modifier). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate joints are located and identified for purposes of testing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Trim and associated components are removed and fitted according to procedure and without damage to vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Joints are tested and their functions explained in terms of the systems/circuits they support. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
