PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is required by people working in the manufacturing environment. They will need to understand and apply the materials planning process, which consists of a number of concepts like the bill of material and the inputs and outputs of the MRP.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Evaluate the materials planning process.
  • Explain the relationship between MRP and inventory.
  • Analyse the role of the bill of material.
  • Evaluate the input and output of the MRP process.
  • Investigate the use of the MRP process in a manufacturing environment.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular outcomes or assessments.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Evaluate the materials planning process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Materials requirements planning (MRP) is evaluated using workplace data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
MRPI and MRPII are compared critically using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The material requirements planning MRPII hierarchy is critiqued using given data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Inputs and outputs from the material requirements planning process are analysed using workplace data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The purpose of the material requirements planning process is discussed using workplace data.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Evaluate the relationship between MRP and inventory.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Independent demand inventory and dependent demand inventory are compared using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Discrete ordering techniques are compared to demand-based ordering techniques using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A series of iterations is performed and critiqued employing rules according to procedures.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Rules include but are not limited to lot-for-lot lot-sizing rules, period order quantity lot-sizing rule, fixed order quantity lot-sizing rule, economic order quantity lot-sizing rule.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Analyse the role of the bill of material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The use of bill of material is evaluated using workplace data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Planning bills of material are compared to manufacturing bills of material using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
"As built" is constructed, and a bill of material indented and summarised for same product is evaluated using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Gross requirements for an "as built" multi-level bill of material are evaluated using workplace examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Individual lead times and cumulative lead times for the product are calculated, presented and critiqued using workplace data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The use of low level coding on a multi-level bill of material is analysed using workplace examples.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Evaluate the input and output of the MRP process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Each of the inputs to the material requirements planning process is explained using workplace data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
MRP workplace examples of application are compared to MRP processes as prescribed procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The projected available balance and planned order releases for a bill of material are calculated and critiqued using workplace data.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Bill of material includes a single-level and a two-level.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Outputs of the material requirements planning process are evaluated using workplace examples.
