PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The competencies captured in this qualification will prepare learners for senior administrative and first line management positions in the private, public and entrepreneurial sectors. This qualification provides broad exposure to the processes and functions of management and administration within the context of an integrated, holistic organisational approach and a transforming socio-economic setting.

This qualification is a combination of theoretical and practical learning outcomes which have the defined purpose of capacitating the learner with workplace applicable competencies, and will provide learners with specialised knowledge and skills in strategic management, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, financial and management accounting, operational and marketing management. It also aims to develop in graduates the capacity for lifelong learning and an awareness of the social context.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an in-depth understanding of a broad range of management concepts and frameworks.
  • Analysing management, policy, leadership and ethical issues in specific business contexts.
  • Analysing economic, social and political factors which affect managers and business people.
  • Analysing appropriate procedures and monitoring systems for organisations.
  • Developing management solutions within different businesses using relevant conceptual and analytical frameworks.
  • Applying the conceptual knowledge and practical skills in a specific work context.

    Rationale:
    This qualification meets the needs of the sector by providing a contemporary Postgraduate learning opportunity for working professionals to undertake advanced reflection and development, using a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, in the specialised area of business administration.

    The typical leaner attempting this qualification will have successfully completed a cognate Bachelor's Degree and have the relevant work and managerial experience in the business administration environment. This qualification, due to its adherence to the requirements of the HEQF, will allow the learner access to further learning, in the form of a Master of Business Administration at NQF Level 9. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The knowledge, skills and cognitive ability demonstrated in a cognate Bachelor's Degree at NQF Level 7.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:
    This qualification may be achieved in part or completely through the Recognition of Prior Learning, which includes formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience. Care will be taken that the mechanism used provides the learner with an opportunity to demonstrate competence and is not so onerous as to prevent learners from taking up the Recognition of Prior Learning option towards gaining a qualification.

    Recognition of Prior Learning may also be used to grant access to the qualification to those learners who do not meet the admission requirements.

    Access to the Qualification:
    Learners registering for this qualification should already have achieved an appropriate Bachelor's Degree at NQF Level 7.

    To be awarded the qualification, learners are required to obtain a minimum of 120 Credits at NQF Level 8.

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

    The following Associated Assessment Criteria should be applied in an integrated manor for all the Exit Level Outcomes:
  • The appropriate technology is utilised across specialised areas in the business administration context.
  • Research skills are applied in an integrated manner in the business administration context.
  • Business management skills are applied across specialised fields in the business administration context.
  • Knowledge acquired during advanced reflections is transferred into practice through effective communication.
  • An understanding of resource and process management is demonstrated in an integrated business administration context.
  • The ability to identify, analyse and solve management and commercial problems is demonstrated in an integrated business administration context.
  • An understanding is demonstrated of socio-economic challenges in Southern Africa.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Assessment will be applied extensively across the modules of learning so as to ensure the integrated achievement of the exit-level outcomes.

    Formative assessment will be applied continually throughout the learning pathway of the individual learning modules.

    Summative assessment will be applied to ensure the achievement of each learning module. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The module content, the degree of complexity and the notional learning time of this qualification have been benchmarked against the following programmes presented at the following foreign institutions:
  • The Higher National Diploma in Business Management at the Brighton School of Business and Management, United Kingdom.
  • The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration at Victoria University at Wellington, New Zealand.

    The Higher National Diploma in Business Management, which is presented by the Brighton School of Business and Management in the United Kingdom over a two year period, offers the following modules as part of its qualification:

    This qualification compares favourably with the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration offered by Victoria University. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows for horizontal as well as vertical articulation to other institutions which may present similar qualifications, subject to the approval of those institutions.

    This qualification may articulate horizontally with one of the following qualifications offered by the institution at NQF Level 8:
  • Postgraduate Diploma: Financial Planning.
  • Postgraduate Diploma: Internal Auditing.

    This qualification may articulate vertically with Master of Business Administration at NQF Level 9, given that the learner has completed the required modules in the research methodology.

    Although formal agreements with other institutions regarding the horizontal and vertical articulation of this qualification are still to be finalised it is foreseen that such will be allowed to take place to cognate qualifications at NQF Levels 8 and 9. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessors and moderators will be appointed to validate learner assessments. The appointment of individuals in these capacities is governed by the institution's policies and procedures. The selected candidates need:
  • Assessment/moderation experience in the subject field being assessed.
  • An NQF Level 9 qualification in the subject field.
  • To be familiar with the syllabus content and required outcomes of the syllabus.
  • Relevant practical work experience in the field of study. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors and moderators must:
  • Hold a qualification at least one level higher than the qualification being assessed or moderated.
  • Have more than two years' teaching experience relevant to the qualification being assessed. Assessors with less than two years' experience have their assessment work moderated by a peer.
