This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person accredited with this unit standard will be able to:

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • Use of electrical test instruments
  • Basic laws of electricity
  • Electronic component symbols
  • Using soldering techniques
  • Interpretation of circuit diagrams 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • This unit standard applies to persons constructing basic electronic circuits in the electrical manufacturing, engineering and technology field.
  • Components include but are not limited to resistors, transistors, diodes, thyristors, diacs, triacs, capacitors, LED`s and IC fundamentals (ie. Timers, op amps, gates, etc.)
  • Circuits include, but are not limited to voltage regulators, multivibrators, voltage dividers, basic amplifiers, basic phase control, rectification and filters.
  • Test equipment includes, but is not limited to multimeters, oscilloscopes and signal generators.
  • Vero-boards and printed circuit boards.

    3. Applicable test equipment are selected and tested for functionality and safety prior to conducting test.

    Construct basic electronic circuits.

    1. Circuit diagram is analysed to ensure correct component layout on the board. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Components are laid out on the circuit board according to the circuit diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Components are soldered according to soldering techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Component layout conforms to circuit diagram.

    Test and commission the circuit.

    1. Circuit is visually checked for faults according to circuit-and-layout diagrams.

    4. Circuit operation is visually confirmed with aid of relevant test equipment.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
