PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work within a chemical industry and are required to transfer liquids.

Learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of transferring liquids in bulk
  • Prepare to transfer liquids
  • Transfer product and or materials to vessels and containers
  • Carryout the post transferring activities

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following learning is assumed to be in place. Where a learner does not have all the appropriate components appropriate adjustments in the learning programme are needed.
  • Basic safety, health and environmental issues
  • Use of language and communication as applied in the chemical industry and the workplace where the learning takes place
  • Introductory knowledge of technology (process chemistry and associated technology) used in the chemical industry
  • Understanding of quality principles
  • Selections of basic tools and materials

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Instructions as referred to in this unit standard include verbal, written, site specific, standard operating, specific and other instructions.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Demonstrate knowledge of transferring liquids.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Reasons for transferring liquids are described.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Reasons for transferring liquids may include storage, processing, manufacture and transport of chemical products needed to complete the manufacturing or processing operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The components of a transfer system are described and the purpose of each component is described.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Components of equipment or a transfer system include:
Pipelines, hoses couplings, valves, pumps, instruments (pressure, level flow indicators), control equipment (control valves, process control equipment or systems), 'breaks' in pipe manifold and the vessels from which and to which the substance is transferred.

Equipment or transferring systems may include fixed installations or the use of loose hoses, valves, siphons, pumps, containers as found small and micro industries.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Procedures used for transferring the liquid is explained with reference to the chemical process and the potential consequences that could be incurred through incorrect transfer of liquids in the chemical process.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Consequences of transferring liquids may include potential damage to equipment, hazards and risk to environment caused by the use of equipment or procedures that are not adequate to handle the liquid transferred.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Prepare to transfer bulk liquids.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The instruction to transfer liquid is explained confirming which liquid must be transferred, where it must be moved to and how it must be moved.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The liquid to be transferred is identified and the availability of an adequate quantity to comply with the instruction is confirmed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. The state of the vessels, transfer lines and other transferring equipment used in the transferring activity is ascertained in accordance with the instruction to transfer liquid.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
State of equipment may include contents, hygiene/contamination, serviceability and availability.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Equipment to be used for transfer is prepared to carry out the transfer of liquid in accordance with instructions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Preparation of equipment to be used may include connecting hoses; confirming integrity of pipe/flow route (interlocks, valves and isolation breaks in the piping manifold); clearing blockages, fixing leaks; draining and or flushing lines; ensuring vessels can accommodate quantities to be transferred.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Documentation required for then transferring activity is completed correctly, in accordance with site specific requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Documents included work permits, instructions, production plans, control logs:
  • All preparatory work must be carried out in accordance with safety requirements which include compliance with instructions, use of PPE and safety measurement equipment such as explosive/toxic gas meters, and documentation recording compliance with instructions, condition of bunds, ventilation, fire fighting protection equipment.
  • Hazards include pressure, moving equipment, electrical, chemical (explosive, corrosive), heat, process conditions

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Hazards regarding the transferring operation and related environment are identified and precautions are explained in terms of site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
    7. Deviations from the standard required is addressed in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
    8. Relevant people are informed before, during and after the transferring process in accordance with instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Transfer product and or materials to vessels and containers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. The transfer is commenced in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The transfer is controlled in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. The transfer is stopped in accordance with instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Carryout the post transferring activities.
