PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work in a manufacturing environment within the Chemical industry. Persons working in liquid, and semisolid packing lines as used in the manufacture of personal, home and garden care, will find this unit standard especially useful.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare to fill containers with product

    Prepare to fill containers with product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The condition of filling equipment is clarified from handover discussions or documentation, and it is ensured to be safe to operate. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Filling equipment is process controlled.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Filling equipment is in good working order and set to the correct specifications for the planned production run. If there are problems, these are corrected or reported in line with Company policy and the operator's scope of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn so that it protects the operator and prevents the product being spoiled. All protective equipment is worn or used as described in the maker's instructions, company policy and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Production services are checked and confirmed as being ready and available for use at the agreed time. Any shortages are reported without delay so that there is no lost production.

    5. The correct packing material is available in sufficient quantities for the anticipated production, and loaded correctly. Shortages are reported promptly to avoid production delays.

    6. The work environment is clean and free from hazards in line with documented best practice and standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Containers are leak free, and are filled with the correct product and to the correct weight, in line with production specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Bottles, jars, tubes.
  • This standard includes the filling of bottles, jars, tubes and the fitting of appropriate caps.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Filling equipment is started up and operated so that production wastage is kept to a minimum. Where there is waste, it is disposed of in line with standard operating procedures and environmental policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Operation is in line with organizational policies, procedures, and legislation, and the equipment is operated so that the safety of the operator and team mates is protected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Quality checks ensure that container and product meet specifications. Deviations from specification are reported to Quality Assurance promptly so that product is not wasted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Consequences of dispatching non-conforming product to the customer are explained in terms of cost to production and consumer satisfaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Any differences from normal equipment performance are noted. Operators adjust the equipment if they are trained to do so. If not, they report to those who are trained to act, without delay, so that there is no wasted production time.

    1. On completion of the run, the machinery is shut down, according to standard operating procedures.

    2. Equipment is cleaned and prepared for the next run, in line with the requirements of the product being manufactured, manufacturer's recommendations, and statutory, health, safety and environmental standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Machinery is inspected for wear and tear, and action is taken either to repair problems or report them to the correct authorities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Hand over, quality and/or productivity documentation is completed accurately, as per organizational or professional body requirements.

    The Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA), for the Chemical Industry in consultation with GEN/FETQA will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators.
