PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the preparation of freight for storage within all modes of transportation. A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to identify, determine, assess, record and store freight.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard is for any person working in the transport environment where knowledge and application of preparing freight for storage procedures is a necessity.

    The context of this Unit Standard refers to aspects, practices and procedures involving the preparation of freight for transportation safely and economically.


    The level assigned to this Unit Standard is appropriate because a narrow range of knowledge and cognitive skills is applied. The application of this Unit Standard is to qualify the person for entry into a career based certification. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Container sealing as well as sealing of wrapped items are checked for irregularities before unpacking. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Identified irregularities (i.e. damage) are immediately reported to the appropriate person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The client`s special unpacking requirements and checking are identified and adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Items are unpacked in the area designated by the client/suitable area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Appropriate care is taken to avoid damage to items when unwrapping.

    6. A final delivery check is undertaken by checking items and codes (if applicable) against the inventory.

    1. Goods are selected/picked and sorted in accordance with pick specifications within agreed timeframe.

    1. The process of storing goods is explained with reference to requirements of relevant legislation (e.g. OHS Act). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The process of stacking goods is explained with reference to safety and protection of the commodity, in line with accepted industry norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The appropriate method of storage is identified with regard to the type of product, weight, value and size. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Solid, liquid, gas, soft, rigid, heavy, high/low value, dangerous, perishable, edible, vulnerable, items of difficult shape, bond storage.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the Transport SETA and/or relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • Moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in both individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    This Unit Standard will be internally assessed by the provider and moderated by a moderator registered by TETA and/or a relevant ETQA.

  • Relevant legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, IMO codes, SABS codes) facilities and company policies that pertain to packing/stockpiling, handling, marking/labeling and securing of freight.
  • Compatibility of product type/categories and the type of decisions required concerning separation of non - compatible products.
  • Appropriate handling equipment, safety equipment and personal protective equipment in relation to the safe handling and securing of freight.
  • Methods of identifying freight or bulk.
  • Special storage and handling conditions required based on storage and handling characteristics of freight (e.g. inherent vice).

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA and be familiar with the full text and subject matter content of the Unit Standard being assessed.
  • The assessor must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge.

    Container - any object used (for example plastic, wood, steel, cardboard and tin) into which goods can be placed.


    Methods and tools of assessment:

    The following methods of assessment have been identified as the preferred measurement and assessment of learner competence in the above-mentioned Performance Assessment Criteria

    1. Written tests/ case studies/ projects
    2. Oral assessment methods (e.g. presentation)
    3. In - situ (on the job) observations
    4. Role Play

    These methods must be carefully selected based on the purpose of the assessment (For example, the written method could be used to assess knowledge or on-job demonstration for practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods (no less than three of those detailed above) in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes

    The following tools may be used to supplement the above minimum assessment methods:

    Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience may serve to supplement the assessment of applied competence. The portfolio should include inter alia:

    1. Written statements from persons (e.g. current and/or previous employer, colleague, peer, manager, external customers) confirming competence of the learner
    2. Relevant certificates or awards
    3. Previous assessment records
    4. Journals/logbook
