PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are, or seek to be, employed in the local economic development environment.

It introduces the learner to the key elements of a computerised database. It also provides the learner with an understanding of the practical application of those elements in own work context.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Identify the function and importance of an up to date database for local economic development
  • Identify the information requirements for a project database in own work context
  • Gather and capture information to set up and run a database in own work context
  • Compare a range of available database software packages and make appropriate recommendations

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    1. Information is gathered in terms of the specified local economic development project in own work context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. An appropriate database is prepared and set up according to the relevant technical specifications determined by the users. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The information is captured onto the available database so as to provide easy and timeous access to all users and in accordance with the quality criteria applicable in own work context. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Compare a range of available database software packages and make appropriate recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The database software available is investigated with an explanation given of key technical data parameters and associated costs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The software options are sorted in terms of their fit with the computer and other resources available in own work context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The preferred software package is selected based on its capacity to address the information storage, retrieval and analysis and sorting needs of local economic development in own work context. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or will assess this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQ, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA .
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA .
