PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 5 National Diploma in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to enhance and develop techniques to assemble closed uppers and bottom stock to produce unfinished shoes through monitoring complete processes in a making department, costing processes pertaining to making, producing layouts in making departments as well as enhancing and introducing methodology to improve making processes. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology.

1. Processes within a making department are monitored and controlled according to standard operating procedures.

2. An analysis of a making sequence for a product is confirmed and implemented successfully in compliance with the standard operating procedures. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Costing out a process from a point of closed uppers and bottom stock. 
OUTCOME NOTES 
Costing out a process from a point of closed uppers and bottom stock to produce a range of unfinished shoes.

Producing a layout of a making department to include people, machine, lighting, ventilation, material storage and sequencing.

1. An appropriate making department layout is designed in compliance with product specification and standard operating procedures.

2. A layout is designed and a diagram of the layout of machinery and equipment is demonstrated and shown in accordance with industry requirements.

3. Layouts are planned according to safety legislation.

Enhancing and introducing a methodology to improve processes. 
OUTCOME NOTES 
Enhancing and introducing a methodology to improve processes to construct shoes by assembling and attaching uppers to bottoms.

1. Reports on enhanced methodology on 2 selected making operations is introduced and enhanced in compliance with standard operating procedures.

2. A report showing an endeavour to improve methodology in 2 operations is produced.
