PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who conduct searches in the law enforcement sector but more relevant to detention facilities sub-sector.

People credited with this unit standard are able to conduct lawful searches and security inspection within detention facilities to ensure a safe environment for staff, inmates and the community. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:

    1. People are searched without violation of human rights.

    2. All unauthorised articles are identified and confiscated in accordance with the relevant policy.

    3. Body cavity searches are conducted in such a manner as to limit injuries in accordance to legislation, policies, procedures.

    4. Resistance to search is dealt with in accordance with minimum force.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

  • The ability to use science and technology will be indicated by the efficient use of metal detectors, close circuit television, computers (for data capturing) and scanners in conducting searches and inspections.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.
  • The ability to search and inspect. The effect of non-compliance will indicate the proficiency in understanding that omission will have more than one effect or consequence. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities in terms of the title.
  • Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible and when simulations are used, there should be supporting evidence to show that the person is able to perform in the real situation
  • Assessment activities should focus on outcomes and should be sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required
  • All assessment should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.

    Terminology
  • Policy - governance principles of various detention facilities.
  • Inmates - any person in detention including "prisoner" as defined by the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998.
  • Inspection - safety and security checks to ensure safe custody, safe working conditions and humane detention of inmates.
  • Detention facilities - any facility where a person is detained as defined by the relevant Act.
  • Unauthorised articles - articles not permitted according to the relevant Act and Policy.
  • Inadmissible items - items that are legal but are not allowed inside detention facilities, like firearms.
  • Body cavity searches - internal searches of the body of a person (e.g. in the mouth, ears etc.)
  • Inherent authorisation - authority obtained through or vested in the position of a person.
