In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Demonstrate an understanding of advanced 3D computer modelling terminology and techniques and use 3D computer modelling programmes to create models for steel structures, create members for structural steel assemblies, load connections to members for structural steel assemblies, create member marks/numbers and lists for assemblies, create plot files for detail drawings for structural steel assemblies, create plot files for general arrangement and marking plan drawings of steel structures in accordance with design calculations and specifications.

Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to enhanced communication processes between draughtsmen and their respective clientele by producing accurate, neat and clearly defined drawings that show the assembly details of the products and structures from all sides, with exact dimensions, the specific materials to be used, procedures to be followed and other information needed to carry out the job.
The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. The competence of detailing structural steelwork assemblies using advanced 3D modelling systems for the fabrication of commercial and industrial structures complements the associated competencies contained in this qualification and contributes to the development of a professional community of Structural Steel Draughtsmen.

The above statement further supports the notion of portability of skills and transformation within industry in that the traditional competencies of critical evaluation and organised layout of each assembly when applied to new and changing technologies will lead to the production of computer-aided detailed drawings that ensure Occupational Health and Safety and cost-effective production is enhanced through a keen application of attention to detail.
