PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Identify different types of assemblies, prepare drawing layouts, set out points and measurements, lay out assemblies for detailing and identify types of connections for assemblies when preparing structural steelwork detail drawings for the fabrication of assemblies for multi-storey buildings in accordance with design calculations and specifications.

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

The competence of detailing structural steelwork assemblies for fabrication of multi-storey buildings complements the associated competencies contained in this qualification and contributes to the development of a professional community of Structural Steel Draughtsmen who are able to transfer the traditional manual competencies acquired at the drawing board into the new technological arena of computer-aided drawing production.

The above statement further supports the notion of portability of skills and transformation within industry in that the traditional competencies of critical evaluation and organised layout of each assembly when applied to new and changing technologies will lead to the production of computer-aided detail drawings that ensure Occupational Health and Safety and cost-effective production is enhanced through a keen application of attention to detail.

  • Mathematical numeracy (geometry and trigonometry) at NQF Level 4 or equivalent

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Learners should be capable of preparing structural steelwork detail drawings for the fabrication of assemblies for multi storey buildings by either manual detailing or two-dimensional computer aided drawing computer programme.

    Range of assemblies for fabrication of multi storey buildings includes but is not limited to:

  • Plate girders (including girders with shear studs for composite action)
  • Beams (including beams with shear studs for composite action)

    Specifications and project requirements include but are not limited to: design requirements, client technical specifications, clearances, similar assemblies, levels, corrosion protection including special considerations for galvanised assemblies such as breather and drain holes.

    Strength checks for connection components include but are not limited to: shear strength, bearing strength, bolt strength and welding strength.
