PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:

Explaining the sugar cane processing value chain with reference to the inputs of the various stake holders.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:
  • Literacy and communications NQF 3.
  • Numeracy NQF 3.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The learner is expected to perform the specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard without direct supervision, but with access to standard operating procedures.

The scope of this unit standard encompasses the following unit standards viz. harvesting, sugar cane processing and sugar distribution.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of sugar cane processing.
    OUTCOME NOTES
Defining the terms used in sugar cane harvesting, processing and distribution.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:

    An understanding of:
  • The effect of harvesting processes on sugar cane processing.
  • The effect of poor unit operation on subsequent processes.
  • The various sugar processing definitions.
  • The interrelationships and interdependencies of various processes in a sugar factory.

    Reasons for:
  • Using the various unit operations.
  • Drawing a detailed flow diagram of a sugar factory.

    Consequences of not:
  • Understanding the interrelationships amongst the various unit operations.
  • Understanding the changes brought about by each unit operation.

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Explain sugar cane process flow.
    OUTCOME NOTES
  • Describing the sugar cane harvesting practices.
  • Describing the various process streams in a sugar factory.
  • Describing the sugar distribution marke.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates.
