This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. 

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to provide a safe and secure environment for the grade R child.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the grade R child for pedestrian safety
  • Protecting the grade R child against dog bites
  • Providing safety and security in the daily activities of the grade R child
  • Ensuring safety in and around the car
  • Ensuring safety in the play park 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent.
  • This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to provide a safe and secure environment for the grade R child in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding environment
  • The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, very repetitive and familiar, no generation of new ideas is needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others
  • In the context of this unit standard a safe and secure environment is provided for the grade R child in a domestic, home- care and/ or child minding in home environment
  • Grade R refers to a child 5 to 6 years of age
  • Safety measures regarding pedestrian safety refer to e.g. not allowing the child to cross the road on his/ her own, walking on the side of the traffic when accompanied by the child, instructing the child not to step off the pavement, reminding the child that the pavement is not a safe area and teaching the child the correct way to cross the street
  • Chemicals refer to e.g. detergents, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, paraffin, benzene, paint remover, thinners
  • Correct manner to cross the street refers to e.g. pointing out how the traffic lights and crosswalks work, why it is important to look left, right and left again even if the traffic light is in favour of the person crossing and even when the person crossing has progressed into the cross walk
  • Safety measures in daily activities refer to e.g. warning the child against playing on building sites, safely storing garden tools and removing possible causes of burns and electrical shocks, dangers around the swimming pool and applying sunscreen before playing in the sun. If the child is allergic to bee stings that safety measure is also included
  • Safety measures for protection against dog bites refer to e.g. teaching the child not to reach out to a tied up dog and/ or strange dog, teaching the child to ask permission from the owner of a dog before playing with the dog, teaching the child never to tease a dog or to stare into the eyes of a dog

    Prepare the grade R child for pedestrian safety.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Measures to ensure the safety of the grade R child as a pedestrian are implemented according to road safety regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The procedures necessary for the child to cross the street are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons are explained why places away from traffic need to be selected to play in. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of repeatedly telling the child not to run into the street when playing is explained with consequences of not doing so. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safest routes to the shops and/ or play parks are discovered with the grade R child. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Protect the grade R child against dog bites. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures to be implemented to protect the grade R child are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct protective action when being knocked over by a dog is explained to the child with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dangers of disturbing a dog that is sleeping, feeding and caring for puppies are explained with examples of the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of providing constant adult supervision when the grade R child in the presence of dogs is explained with consequences of not providing constant supervision. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide safety and security in the daily activities of the grade R child.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures to be implemented in the daily activities of the grade R child are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why sunscreen should always be applied to a child before playing in the sun are explained with consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways of supervising the child when climbing trees are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The grade R child is warned against the dangers of experimenting with chemicals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The danger of the presence of a gun in the home and the correct way of storing a gun is explained according to legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The threat to the safety of the grade R child when playing in out of order refrigerators and freezers is explained with examples of the consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Irregularities and/ or emergency situations are reported immediately to the employer/ parent in accordance with instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Ensure safety in and around the car.

    The safety measures that need to be implemented are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of checking that the child is not present in the drive way when vehicles are in transit is explained with consequences of not checking.

    The dangers of putting the child in the same safety belt with another person are explained with examples of consequences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reason(s) for constant adult supervision of the child in and around vehicles is explained with the consequences on not proving constant supervision.

    Ensure safety in the play park.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety measures to be implemented when visiting the play park with the pre- school child are explained with examples of each measure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The requirements for a safe slide and swing are explained with examples of the requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why the child should be guided to understand his/ her limitations in the play park is explained with examples of each reason. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons why constant adult supervision in the play park is important is explained with consequences on not providing constant supervision at a play park. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The required safety measures are put in place for each activity undertaken.
