PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner completing this unit standard will have been introduced to preventative and interventative conservation techniques used in heritage institutions to care for their material collections. This unit standard has been designed as part of a series in Heritage Management Studies which accredits the learner with the competency of applying techniques to combat the factors which causes the deterioration objects in the collections of heritage institutions. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Heritage Management Studies: an introduction to be completed before commencing with this unit standard. Work experience within the heritage sector or prior learning at NQF Level 3 is an advantage. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The learner must be able to use the proper instrumentation to measure conditions when making recommendations with regard to appropriate strategies to control the environment where conditions are conducive to deterioration.

Moving objects would fall within the range of inside as well as to venues outside the institution. In the case of loans, the documentation accompanying such material should also be completed. These are the condition report; the loan agreement form with the conditions; venue facilities questionnaire for borrowing institutions; and progress condition reports for items travelling to more than one venue.

These measures can be investigated either in a theoretical sense or through practical examples by examining possible precautions and responses to natural disasters; fire, theft and vandalism.

Specialist techniques include:
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or specimens are applied when cleaning and transporting organic, inorganic and synthetic material.
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or specimens are demonstrated when cleaning and transporting organic, inorganic and synthetic material in a Wet collection.
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or specimens are demonstrated when cleaning and transporting organic, inorganic and synthetic material in a Pinned collection.
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or specimens are demonstrated when cleaning and transporting organic, inorganic and synthetic material in Paper or Fine artwork.
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or speciments are demonstrated when cleaning and transporting geological, palaeotological specimens.
  • Techniques to minimise or eliminate damage or loss to objects or speciments are demonstrated when cleaning and transporting specimens in a herbarium.

    A disaster plan for an institution is examined with priority actions and responsibilities identified, relating to a specialist, non-routine collection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A network of specialists and services are identified and developed that need to be called on in the event of a disaster, relating to a specialist, non-routine collection. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Disaster plan is reviewed at set intervals to accommodate changing internal and external conditions, relating to specialist, non-routine collections.
