PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners working within the medical field who are required to assist health professionals performing medical pathology or blood transfusion procedures. Qualifying learners will acquire a broad knowledge of activities within the medical field. This broad knowledge will benefit the learner should they wish to progress further in the medical field thus enhancing the health care delivery system and economic transformation.

Medical pathology procedures include but are not limited to, PAP smears, skin biopsies, swabs, bone marrow aspirations, fine needle aspirates, and stimulation tests.

Blood transfusion procedures refer to Autologous collections, plasmapheresis, cellular, homologous and directed donations.

Health professionals include medical practitioners; pathologists; medical scientists, other appropriate health professionals registered with the relevant Professional Council/s

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Correctly identify patients/clients and accurately inform them, and their guardians in the case of minors, about the nature of the procedure
  • Prepare the equipment required for the procedure
  • Assist the Health Professional with the procedure
  • Meet post procedure requirements 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Language and communication skills at NQF level 3
  • Mathematics equivalent to NQF level 3
  • Unit standard 7576 - 'Demonstrate the ability to use a database for business purposes' or equivalent to NQF level 3
  • Unit standard entitled: 'Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology relevant to phlebotomy' - NQF level 4 (still under development) or equivalent
  • Unit standard entitled:' Comply with safety requirements in the medical pathology or blood transfusion fields' - NQF level 4 or equivalent

    The prescribed protocols referred to in this unit standard are the written instructions relating to specific tasks and procedures of the institution where the learner is currently employed. These instructions are studied and understood by the learner.

    Evidence of treating the patient/client in a professional and ethical manner is demonstrated at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Knowledge of the precise nature and requirements of the specific collection procedure is demonstrated orally or in writing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The patient is identified and informed consent is obtained according to prescribed protocol and relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Oral and written communication with the health professional concerning the nature of assistance required is evident. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pre collection criteria are recorded according to prescribed protocol. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Equipment is correctly selected and prepared. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The patient/client is reassured, prepared and positioned as per procedure and health professional's preference. Assistance is sought with positioning if required.

    Verbal communication with the health care professional and patient/client is demonstrated throughout the procedure 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The instructions given by the health care professional are adhered to

    Infection control and safety measures are adhered to throughout the procedure according to prescribed protocol 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The patient is reassured and observed throughout the procedure. Possible adverse reactions and the relevant corrective actions are explained orally or in writing 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Possible adverse reactions include but are not limited to syncope, anaphylaxis, extreme anxiety and discomfort, excessive pain, change in vital signs
